snippet: This layer was created by LUEG-GIS using official CALFIRE FHSZ data available at: https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/03beab8511814e79a0e4eabf0d3e7247/. It uses the schema from the 2007 FHSZ layer, in order to keep internal scripts and applications that use this layer operational and working. Please refer to CALFIRE for official datasets and questions. The State Fire Marshal is mandated to classify lands within State Responsibility Areas into Fire Hazard Severity Zones (FHSZ). Fire Hazard Severity Zones fall into one of the following classifications: Moderate, High, Very High. The California laws that require Fire Hazard Severity Zones include California Public Resources Code 4201-4204, California Code of Regulations Title 14, Section 1280 and California Government Code 51175-89. This layer displays adopted Fire Hazard Severity Zones (FHSZ) in the State Responsibility Area (SRA), effective April 1st 2024. It also displays recommended FHSZ in the Local Responsibility Area (LRA) from 2007-2011. Due to regulatory processes, there are lands that are no longer classified as SRA and have become classified as LRA yet had a FHSZ designation from the 2007 SRA FHSZ map adoption. To verify your Fire Hazard Severity Zone in LRA, please contact your local agency. This layer also displays the Federal responsibility areas. There will be no FRA FHSZ’s, since CALFIRE does not assess Federal Lands.

description: PRC 4201 - 4204 and Govt. Code 51175-89 direct the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) to map areas of significant fire hazards based on fuels, terrain, weather, and other relevant factors. These zones, referred to as Fire Hazard Severity Zones (FHSZ), define the application of various mitigation strategies to reduce risk associated with wildland fires. CAL FIRE is remapping Fire Hazard Severity Zones (FHSZ) for State Responsibility Areas (SRA) and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (VHFHSZ) in Local Responsibility Areas (LRA) to provide updated map zones, based on new data, science, and technology. This specific dataset provides the approved boundaries for SRA FHSZ's and also displays recommended Very High FHSZ's in the Local Responsibility Area (LRA) from 2007-2011. Due to regulatory processes, there are lands that are no longer classified as SRA and have become classified as LRA yet had a FHSZ designation from the 2007 SRA FHSZ map adoption.
