Description: The City of San Diego has been awarded the status of a "Certified Local Government" by the State of California thereby enabling City staff and the Historical Resources Board (HRB) to evaluate the historial value of properties, and identify impact of dvelopment on those resources. The HRB identifies and designates for preservation those historical resources that embody the special element of the City's architectural, artistic, cultural, engineering, aesthetic, historical, political and social heritages.The City’s historic preservation program is cooperatively managed by the Planning Department, which is responsible for the City’s long-range planning efforts and the development of new ordinance and regulations; and the Development Services Department (DSD), which is responsible for implementing those policies and regulations through permitting and enforcement. Each department oversees different aspects of the City’s historic preservation program in accordance with their respective department mission. Staff in both departments work closely together, ensuring coordination and consistency across the City’s historic preservation program.The DSD’s Historical Resources section is responsible for:Review of projects impacting designated and potential historic resources;Designation of individually significant historic resources;The City’s PDF icon Mills Act Program; andStaffing the City’s Historical Resources Board and its subcommittees.The Planning Department’s Historic Preservation Planning section is responsible for:Development of long-range planning policies and implementing regulations;Development of new historic contexts and surveys; andDesignation of new historic districts.
